Everyone loves cupcakes & their individual serving size makes them perfect for gatherings! The flavor combinations are endless since you can play around with the cake part & the frosting. Decorate them simply with a swirl or some sprinkles for a fun look or go all out with candy, fancy piped frosting & cupcake toppers. Here are some tips to help you bake the perfect cupcakes.
As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, make sure your milk, butter & eggs are room temperature before baking! Check out our post on Preparing to Bake for some extra tips and tricks, like reading through your entire recipe before you begin, & always remember to pre-heat your oven.
Stick with traditional vanilla for the flavor, or go as crazy you like – but be sure to use good quality ingredients for the best flavor!
Using those room temperature ingredients will help your mixture combined beautifully, but be sure not to over mix your batter. You want it to be properly combined, but over mixing can crush the air bubbles, meaning your batter won’t be light & fluffy like you hoped. The best way to achieve that light, fluffy batter is to keep your mixer on low until all of your ingredients have just combined. So, don’t walk away from your stand mixer, stay close & watch your batter carefully.
Next, when putting your batter into your cupcake pans, make sure they are filled evenly, this means you’ll have cupcakes with a level top. Remember that your cupcakes will rise when they bake, so don’t overfill them. Most recipes recommend you fill each cupcake liner 2/3 full.
Place your cupcakes in the center rack in the middle of the oven to bake, this will also help your cupcakes bake evenly. When your cupcakes are in the oven, remember not to peek!
Cooling & Frosting
Once your cupcakes are baked & out of the oven, be sure to remove them from the cupcake pan & place on a cooling rack, so they don’t continue baking & dry out.
Give your cupcakes enough time to cool before icing! The warmth of the cupcake will cause the icing to melt, that is a kitchen disaster we don’t want to happen! When your cupcakes are cool, go ahead & frost them. Aside from adding extra deliciousness, frosting the whole cupcake seals them, making sure they retain their moisture & stay fresh.
